Our History
The Lord’s Pantry was founded and incorporated in June 1991, by Joan McGovern, Frances Gray and Ann Weiss, mothers who had each lost a child to AIDS. They recognized that the Lord’s Pantry could fill the growing need for a support system in Westchester County to assist HIV positive/persons with AID’s.
After Joan’s son Tommy died, Joan and Fran began cooking meals in their kitchens, buying the supplies and relying on donations from local restaurants and companies. They moved to St. Bernard’s Church in White Plains, New York where they shared the kitchen. Today, the Pantry meals are cooked by a hired chef in the kitchen facilities donated by the church, serving over 2500 meals weekly in the Westchester area. The Pantry has since expanded to include meals for caregivers and children of their clients. Meals are delivered three times a day, Monday through Friday, including most holidays. Since that first meal in June of 1991, The Lord’s Pantry has delivered over 700,000 meals throughout the county.
Although The Lord’s Pantry is based in White Plains, we also deliver to New Rochelle, Eastchester, Mamaroneck, Port Chester, Mount Vernon, Elmsford, Ossining, Hartsdale, Tarrytown, Sleepy Hollow, Mount Kisco, and Bedford Hills.
The Lord’s Pantry tries to go wherever they are needed.
Our clients are referred to us from ARCS, Hospitals, Department of Social Services, and clinics that are familiar with our work. Each referring professional sends us documentation of that referral which enables us to feed him or her immediately. We also ask our clients to fill out a client information sheet.
We have had TV and newspaper exposure; have our own brochure and our own video for cable. We speak at churches and schools and have taken part in AIDS AWARENESS Programs all over the county. We do refer clients to ARCS, HIV support groups, and to Meal Delivery services in Peekskill and Yonkers.

Funding and Client Referrals
After losing funding this year after many years from the Ryan White Title I CARE Program, the Lord’s Pantry now only receives contributions from corporations and private donations. Our clients are referred to us from ARCS, Hospitals, Department of Social Services, and clinics that are familiar with our work. Each referring professional sends us documentation of that referral which enables us to feed him or her immediately. We also ask our clients to fill out a client information sheet.
