Local HIV/AIDS Food Service Provider Loses Funding,
May Shut Doors Shortly

White Plains, NY - February 2, 2010– “We have lost our angel,” Joan McGovern, Director of the Lord’s Pantry, stated when hearing the news that their major funding will be eliminated at the end of the month. Ryan White Part A funding, was not awarded to the Pantry after years of sustaining a major portion of the financial needs of the organization. The rules of the grant do not allow the Lord’s Pantry to re-apply for funding for at least another five years.

This one of a kind organization was founded in 1991 by three women, all mothers who lost a child to AIDS. HIV/AIDS continues to be a major concern among health organizations. Today Joan McGovern part of the original three, continues the mission in memory of her son, Tommy, providing three meals a day and hot dinners for HIV/AIDS individuals and their families. Personal relationships have been forged with more than five hundred clients and their loved ones as hot dinners are delivered daily and holidays are made possible with deliveries on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter Sunday.

The Lord’s Pantry kitchen staff and volunteers, located in St. Bernard’s Church in White Plains, have cooked and delivered more than one million meals over the last ten years.

“The Lord’s Pantry can give people with AIDS and HIV the nourishment, love, and support they need.” Says, Mrs. McGovern as she pleas with residents and businesses throughout Westchester County and beyond. “Without their support, we may not survive. Together the Pantry can live on.”
